Drawing In-between Gardens

Exploring Berlin's allotment gardens through drawing, walking, and storytelling

Berlin's allotment gardens are spaces that are often closed and hidden within the urban fabric. The workshops offered participants the opportunity to enter gardens previously unknown to them, meet the gardeners who inhabit and care for these spaces, and observe their hybrid character: the shifting boundaries between public, private, and collective spaces; between cultivated and wild nature; and between human intention and natural growth.

The series included three workshops: "Wilderness & Garden" at Allotment Potsdamer Güterbahnhof; "Gardens & Gardeners" at Allotment Harztal–Wilde Rose; "Stroll & Harvest" at Allotment Kolonie am Flughafen.

Activities included learning about the history of each garden, walking along garden paths, collecting natural materials to create handmade brushes, engaging with gardeners' stories through images and visual notes, and observing how natural processes and design practices intertwine.

The series of events was co-conceived and co-curated with Elenia Beretta (Drawing Nights Berlin). The visits to the gardens were made possible thanks to the collaboration with the board members of the allotments Potsdamer Güterbahnhof, Kolonie am Flughafen, and Harztal–Wilde Rose.
